IMAC visit to Townsville
The Independent Ministerial Advisory Council (IMAC) will be in Townsville on 26 and 27 August 2024 for its first regional visit.
The IMAC will meet with organisations to hear about local initiatives aimed at reducing crime as well as to discuss local challenges, particularly in relation to youth crime.
Co-Chair Mr John Robertson said that the IMAC understood the importance of visiting regional and remote areas of Queensland.
‘As an advisory council to government, it is vital that our members understand the impact of crime on local communities and the local issues that may be driving this level of offending,’ Mr Robertson said.
‘Townsville is often in the media for the wrong reasons. However, we know that there are organisations out there doing fantastic work to support young people and their families.
‘The IMAC will be meeting with these organisations, as well support agencies, to hear, first-hand, what initiatives are in place and what other changes could have the potential to make a positive difference to the Townsville community.’
The IMAC was established in November 2023 to provide advice, guidance and victims’ perspectives on criminal justice issues and youth crime reforms being considered by government.
This includes primary crime prevention and early intervention for young offenders, those at risk of entering the criminal justice system and rehabilitation.
The IMAC also provides advice and guidance on how victim support services could be improved.
Membership of the IMAC is diverse, including victims, First Nations representatives, Peak Body advocates, academics and criminal justice professionals.
‘It is a privilege to be able to travel to different parts of Queensland so our members can gain a more thorough understanding of local issues and drivers of crime,’ Mr Robertson said.
‘I would like to express my gratitude to the organisations and justice agencies who will be taking the time to speak to us. The knowledge we gain from this visit will help to shape our future advice to government.’
